Couples Counseling
Summary: Sheira Kahn, MFT, San Rafael, CA. Specializing in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples

My studies with the groundbreaking researcher/practitioner Sue Johnson, the founder of Emotionally Focused Therapy, taught me that conflict in couples is a protest about closeness. What couples are trying to communicate to each other is how they feel about the connection between them. Humans need secure relationships with others in order to survive. Whatever is going on with couples generally comes back to that.

Empathetic responses by the therapist on the level of attachment emotions – sadness, abandonment, love - bring the couples’ communication to its most truthful level. My job is to create a safe environment where people can be vulnerable with their deepest emotions and learn how to be safely authentic at home. When the couple is willing, this process becomes a corrective emotional experience that allows them to form not only a safe relationship, but also a “safe home” inside themselves where rejection and judgment is replaced by self-love.   To read more about EFT and the research, please go to: http://www.eft.ca/
